Six Things That Move Your Door Estimate

The calculator handles type, material, and glass. These are the line items behind those inputs that show up on a real written estimate.

Material

Steel is the value tier. Smooth fiberglass adds insulation and durability. Wood-grain fiberglass adds aesthetic. Solid wood is the premium — but requires more maintenance.

Sidelights & transoms

Adding sidelights roughly doubles the unit cost. Adding a transom on top adds another 20%. Specify Low-E glass on sidelights to minimize heat-loss.

Decorative glass

Plain insert is included. Decorative, art, leaded, and stained glass are upgrades — broken out as separate lines on the estimate.

Hardware

Standard handle set and deadbolt are included. Premium hardware (Baldwin, Emtek, Schlage Encode smart locks) adds cost — disclosed up front.

Finish

Factory paint or stain is the standard. Custom paint-grade or hand-stained finishes carry a premium and are quoted separately.

Jamb & trim work

Pre-hung door includes the jamb, threshold, and weatherstripping. Wider rough-opening modifications or custom interior casing add labor.

Door Calculator Questions

If yours isn’t here, call us. We’ll give you a real answer.

Fiberglass. Steel is the value option and dent-resistant, but it can rust if scratched and offers less insulation than fiberglass. Fiberglass holds finish 30+ years and won’t warp, rot, or rust — it’s the right answer for most NJ entry doors.

Aesthetically, often yes — they make small entryways feel grand. Energy-wise, they’re a slight downgrade because glass insulates worse than a solid door. Specify Low-E glass on sidelights to minimize the heat-loss penalty.

Pre-hung is standard on a full replacement — we replace the door, jamb, threshold, and weatherstripping as one unit so the seal works correctly. Slab-only replacements are possible but rarely recommended on exterior doors.

Standard handle sets and deadbolts are included. Premium hardware (Baldwin, Emtek, Schlage Encode smart locks) can be added at additional cost — we disclose that as a separate line.

Most single entry door swaps are a same-day job. Doors with sidelights, transoms, or wider rough-opening modifications may run two days. Patio doors are typically same-day unless the rough opening needs framing changes.
