Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Gutters

When gutters are failing in multiple places, pulling away from the fascia, or have been patched more than once, replacement is the more cost-effective choice. NJ winters are hard on gutters — freeze-thaw cycles destroy joints and ice dams overload systems that were never properly sized.

  • Gutters pulling away from fascia in multiple spots
  • Visible rust, cracks, or holes along the run
  • Gutters more than 15–20 years old
  • Multiple failed repairs or persistent leaks
  • Sections that sag and hold water
Compatible with 5-inch and 6-inch K-style guttersThe most common profile in NJ — we confirm fit before recommending any guard system
Best installed during new gutter replacementSaves a second trip and ensures guards are properly seated from day one — no gaps or loose sections
Can be retrofitted to existing gutters in good conditionIf your gutters are solid but clogged every season, guards are a worthwhile upgrade without full replacement
Reduces ice dam risk and keeps pests outSolid debris coverage stops leaves and twigs from packing in — less standing water, fewer freeze-thaw cycles

Why 6-Inch Seamless Aluminum Is Our Standard

Most NJ homes are still being built with 5-inch K-style gutters because that’s what builders have always used. But for the rainfall and roof areas we see in Northern NJ, 6-inch seamless aluminum is almost always the better long-term choice.

  • 40% more capacity than 5-inch. A 6-inch gutter holds significantly more water than a 5-inch, which matters during NJ summer thunderstorms and during snowmelt. Less overflow, less water hitting your foundation.
  • Seamless means fewer leaks. Traditional sectional gutters have a seam every 10 feet — every seam is a future leak point. Seamless gutters are formed continuously on-site, with seams only at corners and downspouts.
  • Aluminum doesn’t rust. Steel gutters can rust through in 15-20 years in NJ winters with all the road salt. Quality aluminum gutters with a baked-on enamel finish hold up 30+ years.
  • Hidden hangers, not nails. Old-school spike-and-ferrule installations work loose over time. Hidden hangers screw into the fascia every 24 inches and don’t fail in heavy ice or snow.
  • Color options that hold up. Modern factory-finished aluminum comes in 20+ colors with finish warranties — no painting needed, ever.

Gutter Replacement FAQs

Most residential gutter replacements are completed in a single day — tear-off, fabrication of seamless runs on site, hangers, downspouts, and cleanup. Larger homes or homes with complex rooflines may take two days. We give you a realistic schedule in writing before the job starts.

Isolated damage — one seam, one run, one pulled hanger — is a repair. If you’ve got multiple failure points, the gutters are over 15 years old, or you’ve been repairing the same sections more than once, replacement is the more cost-effective call. We walk the roof with you and give an honest recommendation.

Most NJ homes do well with 5-inch K-style seamless aluminum. Steeper roofs, larger drainage areas, or homes with heavy tree coverage benefit from 6-inch — they move roughly 40% more water and clog less often. We calculate the right size during the free estimate based on roof square footage and pitch.

Yes — with micro-mesh. Most homeowners with micro-mesh guards go from cleaning 3–4 times a year to once or less. The cheap foam and plastic screen guards you see at the big-box stores don’t hold up and often make clogs worse. We only install guards that have actually earned their keep.
