Six Things That Move Your Gutter Estimate

The calculator handles linear footage, material, downspouts, and guards. These are the line items behind those inputs.

Material grade

5″ aluminum is the baseline. 6″ aluminum is roughly 1.2× for larger roofs that need more capacity. Half-round adds aesthetic. Copper is the premium — about 3× aluminum.

Linear footage

Measured along every roof edge with a gutter run. We field-measure during the estimate — no guessing.

Downspouts & routing

Sized one per 600 sq ft of roof drainage area. More downspouts means better flow and less overflow during heavy rain.

Gutter guards

Micro-mesh guards add about $8.50/ft. Big payback near oak, maple, or pine cover.

Tear-off & fascia repair

Removing old gutters is included. If the existing fascia is rotted or soft, we replace what needs replacing — priced as a separate line.

Drainage extensions

Underground extensions, splash blocks, and downspout buryline work to move water away from the foundation are quoted separately.

Gutter Calculator Questions

5-inch K-style is the standard and handles most NJ homes fine. 6-inch is recommended for larger roofs (3,000+ sq ft), homes with steep pitches that dump water hard, or homes that have seen overflow problems with 5-inch. We’ll tell you which one your roof actually needs.

For homes near big oak, maple, or pine trees, yes — they cut cleaning frequency by 80–90% and pay back the install in 3–5 years of avoided cleanings. For homes with little tree cover, the math is closer to break-even.

Copper is roughly 3× the per-foot cost of seamless aluminum. It lasts 75–100 years and develops the patina look. We install it occasionally on premium homes and historic restorations — usually for the front elevation only.

If the existing fascia is rotted or soft, yes — we’ll replace what needs replacing and price it as a separate line on the estimate. We don’t hang new gutters on bad wood and call it a day.

General rule: one 2×3 downspout per 600 sq ft of roof drainage area, or one 3×4 per 1,200 sq ft. We size by actual roof area on the written estimate, not guesswork.
